| Restructuring Plans | Restructuring Plans AbbVie continuously evaluates its operations to identify opportunities to optimize its manufacturing and R&D operations, commercial infrastructure and administrative costs and to respond to changes in its business environment. As a result, AbbVie management periodically approves individual restructuring plans to achieve these objectives. In 2019, 2018 and 2017, no such plans were individually significant. Restructuring charges recorded were $234 million in 2019, $70 million in 2018 and $86 million in 2017 and were primarily related to employee severance and contractual obligations. These charges were recorded in cost of products sold, R&D expense and SG&A expenses in the consolidated statements of earnings based on the classification of the affected employees or operations.
